Sedan or Coupe? | Luther Burnsville Hyundai

Sedan, coupe, crossover, SUV. In the automotive world, sometimes the jargon used when referring to vehicle models can get a bit confusing. In some case, like sedan vs. SUV, the major physical differences leave little room for confusion. But when it comes down to the age-old question of coupe vs. sedan, the differences can be a little harder to spot.

We here at Luther Burnsville Hyundai are here to set the record straight. Keep reading to find out the differences between a coupe and a sedan.

2-door vs. 4-door

Many people believe that the only difference between a coupe and a sedan is how many doors the vehicle has. A coupe traditionally has two doors, while a sedan has four doors. While this difference is definitely the easiest to spot, it is not the only one.

Exterior Design

While at first glance a coupe and sedan can appear to have very similar exterior design, further examination will show the unique exterior designs each is known for. A coupe typically has a sportier design and tends to be a bit more compact. On the other hand, sedans are known to have a more mainstream design and a longer overall length.

Seating

The seating and interior dimension specifics are what really separate the coupe and sedan. A coupe generally has two sets of four seats in a 2+2 arrangement. A coupe has less room in the rear of the vehicle, explaining its two seats in the rear as opposed to the traditional three. The two seats in the rear of a coupe are also smaller than your average rear seats.

Keeping in the theme of classic design, sedans have the more traditional five seats with two in the front and three in the back. The word coupe comes from the French word for "cut," hence the coupe having a seat cut out from the sedan design.

Interior Volume

When it comes to the rear interior volume of these two vehicles, the differences are hard to argue with. A coupe is any vehicle with less than 33 cubic feet of rear interior volume. On the other hand, a sedan is any vehicle with equal or greater than 33 cubic feet of rear interior volume.

Long story short, if you are looking for a sporty vehicle to cruise the open road, the coupe is your car. If you are in the market for something that can haul the family, stick with the sedan. Either way, when you purchase from Luther Burnsville Hyundai, you will be driving a top of the line vehicle home every time.
