This week at the Los Angeles Auto Show Hyundai unveiled Hyundai Virtual Guide, an interactive owner’s manual app. The app is set to launch later this year and will make Hyundai the first mainstream automaker to launch an augmented reality owner’s manual.

Hyundai Virtual Guide will first be available for use with the 2015 Hyundai Sonata, but other models will soon follow suit. The app uses two- and three-dimensional tracking technology to identify different parts of the vehicle inside, outside and under the hood. The app then supplies users with additional information regarding the various parts of the vehicle.

To active the interactive owners manual users first need to download the free app from the Apple App store or Google Play. Once open, users simply need to point and shoot anywhere on the vehicle and the apps will identify which features it has additional information on. For example, if a user scans the engine bay and click on the washer fluid symbol they can watch an interactive simulation on how to refill washer coolant step by step.

When the app first launches it will be able to identify more than 45 major features of the Sonata including the following:

  • Air Filter
  • Smart Cruise Control
  • Bluetooth Phone Pairing
  • Warning Indicators
  • Clock
  • Engine Oil
  • Brake Fluid
  • Fuse Box
  • Smart Trunk

Users will also have access to 82 how-to video guides, six 3D overlay images and more than 50 informational guides.

Hyundai used a quality consumer survey to determine the top difficult-to use features and used this information as a base for Hyundai Virtual Guide. The app is compatible with any smartphone or tablet and is sure to reinvent the way carmakers handle the traditional user’s manual
